What is the deal with osteopaths in Germany?

I went to an osteopath for the first time today after a referral from my Hausarzt and it was one of the weirdest β€˜medical’ experiences I have ever had. Is any of it based on science? Not trying to start a fight, just trying to understand their position in the medical field in this country. Thanks a bunch!

CMV: If naturopaths, chiropractors, and osteopaths were strictly evidence based these jobs would not exist.

All three 'alternative' health practitioners utilise a combination of both western evidence based medicine and pseudoscience. If they only utilised proven effective therapies they would no longer practice pseudoscience.

Without these pseudoscience's their scope of practice would match that of their equivalent counter part (EG: Naturopaths following only evidence based therapies would therefore be a registered dietitian).

In addition I believe that this would be better as we would only have evidence based therapies instead of people scamming the non health literate with placebos.

EDIT: My location is Australia and primarily entails Australian professions. Osteopaths are under allied health here, do not have ability to prescribe medication and do not have ability to complete surgery. They do retain the Dr title, however this is not equivalent to an Australian MD.

EDIT 2: I don't believe that alternative therapies shouldn't exist, I believe that they should not be paired in the same practice as a health practitioner providing evidence based care. This is to avoid profiting off of confusion on what is looney and what is real when dealing with someone less health literate.

Regarding Non-Physician Osteopaths and OMT

Hey, I’m a mod over at r/osteopathy.

I think it would greatly ease communication on this platform if there was a clear distinction made between r/osteopathic and r/osteopathy. I’ve seen comments here proposing that this sub should be for American physicians and medical students primarily, and that r/osteopathy should be for non-physicians / OMT discussion.

I agree with this, and from what I can tell, this wouldn’t be an unpopular move.

This post is just a polite request to signpost anyone over to r/osteopathy if you think that’s where they need to be. I don’t know how active the moderation here is but potentially a pinned message could be useful. Anyway, thanks for reading!

Any experience with an osteopath?

Hi everyone, after getting my last lap 2.5 years ago and doing relatively well for a while, I've been suffering from more pain again in the past half year or so. I'm getting an MRI again next week, and will discuss potential treatment options again with my doc after that, but I also want to explore other ways to help myself. I'm currently doing the low FODMAP diet with support from the hospital dietician, and this actually helped with some parts of my pain, e.g. menstrual and ovulation pain are reduced. But the pain that is the most persistent and keeping me from being really active is my chronic pelvic pain. Lots of people in my circle have advised me to go see an osteopath, but they all went there for different reasons. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with osteopath treatment? Thanks.

Can I see a osteopath?

Hello ! I had a pulmonary embolism In August 2020, and I was taking Xarelto until the end of October.

I would like to see an osteopath for my back but I am not sure I can because of the EPB

I have seen two pulmonologists and one is saying « yes » and the other one « no ».

What do you think ?

PS : Reddit has been sooo helpful this past year, thanks a lot !

Elbow nerve compression/pain. Physio, doctor and osteopath don’t know the answer. Need some suggestions for what it could be/treatment options? TOS?

TL;DR: Recurrent elbow/shoulder/finger/rib dislocations/subluxations. Elbow pain. Pain from collarbone/neck to index finger. Worse every morning. Pins and needles when arms raised above head or chest. Headaches from neck pain that improves with neck manipulations. Nothing seems to help elbows or stop the paresthesia. TOS?

BACKGROUND: Okay so I’m not yet diagnosed by a geneticist but my doctor and cardiologist both think I have EDS. I got a diagnosis of BJHS at 14 (now 27). Anyway, I saw this elbow and shoulder specialist at 14 in a children’s hospital for elbow/shoulder dislocations which were really interfering with my life/ability to play team sports and at the time he just gave me exercises to do to reduce the rate of them and sent me to a specialised physio who had dealt with hypermobility to the extent that it caused frequent dislocations. Honestly my memory sucks so I’m not sure what he did but I remember having to quit all sport, which sucked because I loved it.

Fast forward to now….I wake up every morning with extra pain and inflammation in my arms from my neck to my fingers and the elbow hurts to bend if I sleep with them straight, yet hurt to straighten if I sleep bent. Whenever I have my arms raised above my head I get pins and needles all the way down to my hands (pattern is stronger in index finger so seems like median nerve). Could it be that my wrist is dislocating and I’m not aware? Very unstable wrists. I noticed recently that parts of my hand subluxate and I wasn’t aware they were subluxations. Anyway, how did you work out which nerve was compressed? Could it be TOS?

Edit: diagnosed with TOS today so I have my answer. She did say the elbow pain is likely worse than it might be with just TOS due to constant subluxations and my carrying angle.
