β€œIndie Sleaze” and β€œInternet Awesomesauce”: Meet the woman schooling TikTok on niche aesthetics

--_from VOX

"There is a mural at the bagel shop in my hometown that haunted me as a child. It is massive and square, composed of blob-like humanoid shapes in shades of rust and orange with tiny faceless heads, all of them inhaling swirls of piping-hot java. I remember thinking that it was sort of threatening, but what I did not realize at the time was that it was part of a much larger and slightly insidious graphic design trend with an on-the-nose name: Global Village Coffeehouse.

It was TikTok where I learned this, thanks to a video by a woman who goes by the moniker Melina Bee and who has made dozens of videos explaining similarly niche graphic design and architectural aesthetics. Global Village Coffeehouse, for instance, is the term for late ’80s-late ’90s graphic design that combines the appearance of handcraftedness with ancient or tribal imagery, often with earth tones and vaguely nature-oriented motifs like trees, suns, and waves. It’s since been regarded more cynically as a way for corporations to profit from the look and feel of grassroots movements. It, she says, was the reason she started making the videos in the first place:

β€œMy jaw just dropped,” she says of when she first discovered the term. β€œI had to share it with a friend who’s also like me, very visual, and I was like, β€˜Did you know this is a thing?’” Since her first viral hit about the Camden bench and hostile architecture in March 2021, Melina has become known as the go-to source for design trends you know visually but perhaps don’t have the words to describe. While her background is in architecture and historic preservation, she credits a volunteer collective called the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute for coining and curating many of the styles, which range from the 1950s diner favorite β€œGoogie” (think retrofuturist β€œSpace Age” architecture) to the ’90s New Age-y β€œZen-X” (think Sting doing yoga).

We chatted about the ever-quickening speed of trend cycles and whether there were some styles that were too awful to ever revive, among other fun new words (β€œWhimsigothic!” β€œFrasurbane!”).

How’d you get into design history?

I have a master’s in historic preservation with a focus on craft material and design, which is more architecture-based, there are a lot of overlapping principles [with design history]. Last summer, I stumbled on something called the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute (CARI) on Reddit, and discovered a style they called Global Village Coffeehouse. And ther

Communism is being turned into aesthetics and niches on social media platforms. What can we do about it without sounding arrogant?

This problem has been circling my mind for a while but after Grimes’ (Elon Musk’s wife) tik tok video about β€œAI communism” I think the left needs to tackle the way that communism is being used by the rich to turn it into a niche subculture. This is so that it will become a sort of β€œedgy” thing and therefore keep these ideas from becoming mainstream and further alienate the working class from it. At the moment this problem might not seem big but soon, if you tell someone you’re a communist they’ll assume you’re some sort of social reject and move on. How do we stop this without sounding arrogant? I ask this because, surely, it will seem arrogant to be telling people β€œno you can’t represent communism in this way” etc etc. Sorry if this idea is odd or you guys don’t feel that it is that much of a problem, it’s just that the fetishisation of communism on social media is infuriating and it’s being used as a tool of the rich to just assign someone with β€œalternative culture” to refrain the ideas from being mainstream instead of it being looked at as a genuine political ideology that can be realised.

Niche Vs. Aesthetic

So, being a graphic designer who relies on premade liscensed artwork to create the final designs, I have no unified style. I also do different niches so my shop looks too random.

If I want to make a shop that has a unified theme, should it be based on one niche and make an album for each aesthetic? (i.e. retro, handdrawn, illustrations, text based, etc.)

Or stick to one aesthetic and target different niches that would still be relevant to that style?

Gragas has a fun kit and fills an interesting niche BUT I don't like playing him because of his aesthetic/theme - reasonable?

Maybe I am just weird and too picky but there's nothing appealing about playing as a fat alcoholic lol.

Love AP junglers but everything about him throws me off, voice lines, appearance etc. Anyone else feel the same way?

Blackpink was my introduction to k-pop. Are there other groups similar in style/aesthetic/sound? So far, I'm having a hard time finding any others that fill the same niche.

Specifically, groups with a small number of members that have a similar sound. I've done some cursory research but I know NOTHING about k-pop in general and many of the groups that I've found have tons of members or don't strike the same balance in sound that Blackpink has.

I love Blackpink's fashion, spectacle, sound, and attitude, and I suppose their popularity might come from the fact that there aren't too many other groups doing what they are doing. I've had THE ALBUM and Blackpink In Your Area on repeat for about a week now lol.

I'm sure this question gets asked a lot, so I apologize in advance. My research just hasn't turned up much.

Thank you, BLINKs!

Looking for something niche: a gothic fantasy series similar in nature to the aesthetic of "Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess."

Oh man, this request is sort of embarrassing for me but I hope someone can help.

Here's a link to some screenshots from the game: http://i.imgur.com/bx1grzO.jpg

I didn't know where else to go with such a specific request, but I'm looking for a gothic inspired fantasy novel that includes Judeo-Christian elements (Satan, Demons, God, etc.) with a touch of exoticism in its world and setting. I'm fine including other tropes and elements common to fantasy, but the semi-comedic take on overpowered beings trying to bring "The Great One" back by exerting their godlike power on regular people was very intriguing, and is what drew me to the game. Likewise, the presentation - the dark reds and flowing script all over the place, the character names and unique personalities - made me want to find something similar. Ideally, it'd be a book that is ok with torture - I think it suits the gothic theme pretty well, and if it takes itself someone lightly at times that would make it even better.

I'd like to stay away from grimdark stuff, or heavy, heavy reading - if you guys have read "Dusk" by Tim Lebbon, know that I don't want something as dark as that. Maybe kinda "Dark Souls"-y, but darker? I'm not opposed to grimdark - I just don't want it to be the focus of the book aesthetically.

I can try and clarify more if need be, but if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations I would greatly appreciate it! I know its a weird request - I really hope there's something out there!

I also wanted to explain musically what's going on in the song (what's it's Scale, Tunning, etc.. but I don't have the required knowledge to do so, but I figured it's kind of too much to ask. If anyone could help me with that too, that would be awesome!
